Sample-McDougald House Museum

Why Go To The Sample-McDougald House Museum?

If you have a day at Pompano Beach, and a deep love of history, then you should check out the Sample-McDougald House Museum. This historical house doesn’t just have a lot of history for the residents of Pompano Beach, but also a rich cultural background and well-preserved architecture.

The house was built by Albert Neal Sample in 1916 and later sold to the McDougald family in 1943. After the family stopped using the house in 1990, they began to preserve the house. It became a time capsule, keeping the architectural and structural form of the original dwelling. The Sample-McDougald House Preservation Society was formed, and the house was moved to its current site in Centennial Park.

The House Museum has been fully restored and is a perfect day trip for any number of reasons. Plus, it is pretty cheap to get in at $10 per person and $5 per child. If you are a resident of John Knox Village, you can get inside with a valid ID!

Daily Guided Tours

The museum offers daily guided tours through the house for over 7,500 thousand visitors per year. The tours talk about both the Sample and McDougald families and their importance to both the house and the Pompano Beach area. They also discuss South Florida architecture and how the families lived in the house back in the 20th century.

It’s the perfect tour for both kids and adults. If you have even a passing interest in the two families, architecture, or early 20th-century life, then this is the tour for you.

The Surrounding Park

Once you’ve finished everything there is to do in the house museum, then you can step outside and enjoy Centennial Park. The 5-acre park surrounds the property and is available for picnics, outdoor activities, and even the edible heritage garden. There’s a lot to do inside the park, even if an event isn’t going on.

Several Hosted Events

The Sample-McDougald house isn’t just about the house museum and the Centennial Park, but also about the events that the house and surrounding area hold. Several scheduled events happen year-round.

These include presentations of the food grown in the agricultural districts of Florida, outdoor yoga and mediation sessions, car shows, arts and craft festivals, and family-focused activities.

A Place For A Wedding Rental

The beautiful house is not just a relic of the past, but also a backdrop for some of your present moments. The house can be rented for weddings, with the ceremony taking place outdoors, and the interior of the house can be used for photoshoots. Plus, the bride and groom get to use a bridal suite and dressing room within the home. That certainly can add some extra ambiance and emotion for your big day!

The house museum isn’t only an old structure. It is a place where you can learn about history, spend some time outdoors, and perhaps even make new memories inside the old house. Come visit, today, and bring the entire family. It will be a day you won’t soon forget.
