There are many different types of mold. In this article, National Restoration Experts discusses the main types of mold:
Black mold
A few sensationalist articles have led people to fear ‘black mold’, but the truth is that not all black mold is toxic and not all toxic mold is necessarily black mold. There are two types of black molds that produce mycotoxins and therefore make them toxic, namely Stachybotrys chartarum and Aspergillus. They are found in buildings that have been subjected to moisture damage and cause symptoms such as eye irritations, skin irritations, nasal stuffiness and wheezing.
White mold
The body of mold is generally white, but it may change color as the mold ages. After the white mold produces spores, it may turn black or blue. Efflorescence, which is a salt deposit, is often mistaken for white mold. To distinguish between efflorescence and white mold, put a piece of it in water. If it dissolves, then it is efflorescence.
Green mold
Some common types of mold, such as Cladosporium, aspergillus and penicillium may appear green, but green mold is generally not a specific type of mold (it is fungi). To determine whether the fungi poses any health risks to the occupants of a building, you will need to have it tested.
Gray mold
Gray mold is generally found on plants and like green mold, it is actually a fungus and not mold. Gray mold often affects sick or damaged plants that are starting to die. It can spread to other healthy plants or healthier parts of the affected plant, so it is best to remove it. The cause of gray mold is water, so your plants will be more susceptible to gray mold if they are wet.
Brown mold
The brown and tan molds that are found in buildings include Aureobasidium pullulans, Taeoniella sp., and even the very common Pithomyces chartarum. Brown mold is generally caused by wood rot from fungi. Wood that is exposed to moisture are more susceptible to brown mold. Brown mold can also be the result of contaminated insulation, so it’s best to have a specialist check it out and correct the source of the problem.
Blue mold
Unlike other types of mold, blue mold doesn’t need a lot of water to grow. The common types of blue mold are Penicillium and Aspergillus. Aspergillus and Penicillium and this is (should this be “are found in bathrooms” or did you mean to write something else?) usually found in bathrooms.
