The Wakodahatchee Wetlands have been accessible since 1996 and are located at 13026 Jog Road in Delray Beach. Constructed on 50 acres once owned by a wastewater utility. The newly constructed wetlands are accessible to the public for free. Wakodahatchee has a three-quarter mile boardwalk that connects open water pond sections to islands covered in bushes and snags that provide breeding and roosting habitat for birds.
Along the boardwalk, informative signs and gazebos with benches are located. This location is located on the Great Florida Birding Trail’s southern portion and provides several opportunities to watch birds in their native settings. There have been over 178 bird species documented, as well as turtles, alligators, rabbits, fish, frogs, and raccoons.
Each day, the Southern Region Water Reclamation Facility pumps about two million gallons of highly treated wastewater into the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, which serves as a percolation pond, replenishing the water table with billions of gallons of fresh water.
This tranquil boardwalk walkway is an excellent spot to observe a variety of animals and waterfowl. Additionally, there are gazebos and a lovely stretch in a forested area that provide excellent resting spots.
At the trail’s start, there is street parking. The path surface is generally a wooden boardwalk at least six feet wide. Because the projected slope is mild (all 3% or less), this trail should be accessible to the majority of wheelchairs/mobility equipment or strollers. Please use caution as the boardwalk can become rather slippery during rainstorms.
At the trailhead, there are restrooms. A map and explanatory booklets are available at the trailhead kiosk. Sunrise to sunset, the boardwalks are open. There are covered gazebos and benches where you may relax and observe the birds.
